Finding purpose in life after retirement is a common challenge for many individuals. For some people, work and career gave them a sense of purpose. When the job is gone, they struggle to find meaning.
I was one of those people who had a career that gave me purpose. My job reflected my values, aspirations, and the impact I wanted to make in the world. When I first retired, I remember waking up one morning to no emails, not a single email in my inbox. I was used to receiving 100+ a day and now there was nothing. I realized that I had nowhere I needed to be, nobody was waiting on my input, and there was nothing I had to get done.
After a month of that, I unretired and went back to work.
Blue Zone Challenge
Now a couple of years have passed and I’m trying the retirement gig again. This time, I’m better prepared and have a better sense of purpose for this stage of my life. Recently, the monkeys and I have taken up the “The Blue Zones Challenge: A 4-week Plan for a Longer, Better Life.” Blue Zones are those areas of the world where people live longer and healthier lives. The longevity observed in Blue Zones is attributed to a combination of factors including individuals having a strong sense of purpose and maintaining an active, engaged lifestyle throughout their lives.
Week One of the Blue Zone Challenge asks participants to write a purpose statement. As I prepared to write my purpose statement, I reflected on what I had done to make retirement work for me this time around,

- Continue Learning: Enroll in courses or workshops to learn something new. Whether it’s formal education or informal learning, the pursuit of knowledge can be a fulfilling endeavor.

- Travel and Exploration: Take the opportunity to explore new places and cultures. Traveling can broaden your perspective, create new experiences, and bring a sense of adventure.
- Health and Well-being: Focus on maintaining good physical and mental health. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and mindfulness practices can contribute to overall well-being.
- Mentorship: Share your knowledge and experiences by mentoring others. Offering guidance and support to younger generations can be deeply rewarding.
- Create a Routine: Establish a daily routine that includes activities you enjoy. Having structure in your day can provide a sense of purpose and help you make the most of your time.
